Stair Society
ActiveDescription
The Stair Society is Scotland's leading legal history society. Founded in 1934, it exists to encourage the study and advance the knowledge of the history of Scots Law through the publication of original documents and the reprinting and editing of works of sufficient rarity or importance. A registered charity, the Society has produced over sixty-five volumes and aims to publish one volume each year, though this is not guaranteed; some are of antiquarian interest, while others carry wider intellectual and historical significance. Its books are made available free to members in electronic form on the HeinOnline legal database three years after hardback publication. Each November the Society holds an annual meeting at which a distinguished lecturer delivers an address, followed by lunch for members and guests. The Society depends on the support of Scottish advocates and solicitors, legal historians internationally, and libraries and institutions, and, when resources allow, it also funds research in furtherance of its objectives.
