Commission for Looted Art in Europe (CLAE)
ActiveDescription
The Commission for Looted Art in Europe (CLAE) is an international, expert, non-profit representative body that researches, identifies and recovers looted cultural property on behalf of families, communities, institutions and governments worldwide. It negotiates restitution policies and procedures with governments and cultural institutions, promotes the identification of looted cultural property and the tracing of its rightful owners, supports restitution claims internationally, and works to change public policy and legislation across Europe. The Commission established and provides the Central Registry of Information on Looted Cultural Property 1933–1945 (www.lootedart.com) to fulfil Washington Principle VI, works with museums and the art trade on provenance research and codes of practice, and states it has been instrumental in restituting over 3,500 Nazi-looted objects since 1999.
