Selden Society
ActiveDescription
The Selden Society is the only learned society and publisher devoted entirely to English legal history, covering the history of the law, the development of legal ideas, the legal profession, the courts and legal institutions, judges and lawyers, and legal literature and records. Founded in 1887, it pursues its mission through the publication of works on English legal history and by encouraging exchange among members through lectures, meetings and correspondence. Its annual series produces definitive editions of unpublished material — legal records such as plea rolls, unpublished law reports and judicial notebooks, together with editions of legal treatises and collections of Readings and Moots at the Inns of Court — each presenting the full original text with a modern translation and a substantial introductory essay. A supplementary series addresses the history of the legal profession at the Inns of Court and Inns of Chancery and related material. The Society also promotes research among early-career scholars through the Milsom PhD studentship, the Holt award (a grant in aid of archival research) and the biennial David Yale Prize. It is governed by an elected President and Council, with affairs administered from the School of Law, Queen Mary, University of London.
