Description

English PEN is one of the world's oldest human rights organisations, championing the freedom to write and the freedom to read around the world. It is the founding centre of PEN International, a worldwide writers' association with 130 centres in more than 90 countries. With the support of its members, a community of writers, readers and activists, English PEN protects freedom of expression whenever it is under attack. The organisation campaigns for writers facing persecution around the world and offers respite residencies for three to five writers per year. It celebrates contemporary international writing through its online magazine, PEN Transmissions, and awards literary grants for translating new works into English. English PEN brings together writers, readers and translators for public conversations and events, and celebrates courageous writing through its annual literary prizes: the PEN Pinter Prize, the PEN Heaney Prize, and the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize.
