Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (AIRC)

Active

Description

The Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (AIRC) at the School of Computing, Ulster University, develops cutting-edge AI theories, algorithms and tools, and creates AI solutions for practical problems through engagement with stakeholders and users and alignment with university, local, national and European initiatives. The centre's vision is to develop AI technologies that underpin an intelligent society, empower people and support a sustainable future. AIRC's research is organised across three themes: Learning, Modelling and Optimisation (machine learning, mathematical modelling of complex systems including opinion dynamics, ecological networks and pandemic modelling, and Bayesian and multi-objective optimisation); Knowledge, Reasoning and Decision-making (knowledge representation, reasoning, logic including theorem proving and formal verification); and Informatics and Systems (bio/geo-informatics, multimedia, swarm systems, digital interventions, food authentication, virus detection, and text/video/image analytics). The centre hosts a Hyperspectral Imaging Facility supporting research in spectral pattern recognition and food authentication, and collaborates with industry through the BT Ireland Innovation Centre (BTIIC) and the Advanced Research and Engineering Centre (ARC) with PwC and Queen's University Belfast. Projects include conversational AI for mental health (ChatPal), multimodal video search for organisations including the BBC and British Library, and COVID-19 modelling.
