Joseph Conrad Society (UK)
Description
The Joseph Conrad Society organises an annual international conference with alternate years in London and then elsewhere in the UK or other parts of Europe. It publishes an academic journal, The Conradian, which appears twice per year. It runs an annual essay prize, the Juliet McLauchlan Essay Prize, for young researchers into Conrad's life and works. The committee includes academics from Britain, Italy, and Hong Kong, and the jornal's editorial board includes academics from Britain, Poland, Switzerland, Israel, Greece, the Netherlands and Hong Kong. The Joseph Conrad Society (UK) works closely with the Joseph Conrad Society of America and the Joseph Conrad Societies of France, Italy, Japan, and Poland. It also has close ties with POSK, the Polish Embassy, and the Polish Cultural Institute. It has a genuinely international reach with members from all parts of the world: it has held conferences in Canada and South Africa and has recently collaborated on an Indian publication project for the centenary of Conrad's death. It supports the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Joseph Conrad and promotes adaptations of Conrad's works. These have included Peter Fudakowski's film Shadow Line and Rob Lemkin's film African Apocalypse. It has also recently given advice to two young film-makers from Poland.
