Public International Law Research Group
Description
The Public International Law Research Group (PIL Research Group) is a research group within the Oxford Law Faculty, a prominent centre for the study of international law for over 400 years. It consists of faculty members specialising in public international law and research students at the University, mainly MPhil and DPhil students, who focus on cutting-edge issues in public international law.
The PIL Research Group organises weekly PIL Research Seminars during term time, usually on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 am. These seminars provide a platform for research students to receive feedback, engage in dialogue, and receive support on their work related to public international law. Faculty members, research students, and visiting researchers at the University of Oxford interested in attending the seminars but who are not part of the Research Group are advised to contact the Research Assistant of the group in the first instance.
The PIL Discussion Group holds regular speaker events focusing on topical and challenging issues in public international law. It is open to practitioners, academics, and students from both within and outside the University of Oxford.
Oxford is home to a distinguished group of international law scholars who research and teach various aspects of public international law. While the study of general international law, which forms the foundation of the international legal system, remains significant, the teaching and research of international law at Oxford allow for specialisation in specific areas of international law.
International Law in Oxford benefits from strong connections with related fields of study within the Faculty of Law, such as human rights law, environmental law, and legal philosophy. The Institute for European and Comparative Law provides institutional support for collaborations with comparative law and European law. The study of international law also plays a central role in research programs and graduate courses offered by other centres and institutes across the University, including the Refugee Studies Centre, the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict, and the Bonavero Institute for Human Rights. Additionally, the University serves as a major hub for the study of international relations, and international lawyers within the Faculty of Law collaborate with colleagues in the Department of Politics and International Relations, as well as the University’s Blavatnik School of Government, to strengthen connections with scholarship in public policy and international relations.
