Population Ageing Programme

Description

The Oxford Institute of Population Ageing studies global demographic changes and the effects of an ageing population, providing recommendations for governments, businesses, and society. It is predicted that over the next half-century, the elderly will outnumber the youth in most countries. This unprecedented demographic shift, propelled by declining mortality rates among the elderly, particularly in developed economies, carries significant implications for every facet of society and economy.

This fundamental restructuring of societal demographics necessitates major institutional changes. The Institute connects research in ageing, education, fertility, health, and environment, fostering partnerships with governments, businesses, and non-governmental organisations to influence policy. Furthermore, it offers summer schools and training for researchers and professionals.

The Institute's research encompasses several areas:

  • Understanding Demographic Change - focuses on societal adaptation to impending population changes, examining the interplay of fertility, mortality, and migration.
  • Demography, Science, and Innovation - investigates the correlation between the elderly, information and communication technology, citizenship, and inclusion.
  • Demography and Economy - backs extensive research into the implications of ageing demographics on labour markets, retirement customs, and pension provisions.
  • Demography and Society - studies intergenerational family roles and relationships.
  • Biodemography and Health - explores the policy implications of ageing populations on health and long-term care.
