Centre for Multilingual and Multicultural Research (CMMR)
Description
Established in 2007, the Centre for Multilingual and Multicultural Research (CMMR) enables and promotes the best research in multilingualism and multiculturalism. The Centre brings together researchers, working in a range of disciplines, from across Birkbeck, the University of London, and further afield, to enhance collaboration opportunities and to maximise real-world impact.
The CMMR hosted more than 30 visitors since 2014, including visiting MA students, visiting PhD students and visiting scholars from around the world. More than half of the visitors ended up co-authoring papers with members of the department.
The CMMR also hosts the regular Bilingual Forum for Therapists and Mental Health Interpreters.
The CMMR's aims and objectives are to:
- contribute to debates about linguistic and cultural diversity, focusing on London in a global context.
- provide a platform for research, create opportunities for new work, and establish national and international collaborations.
- support research by postgraduates and practitioners in the relevant fields.
- promote research by drawing together, coordinating and enhancing existing and potential areas of national and international excellence support the development of researchers and research groups working across disciplinary and organisational boundaries
- provide resource management and infrastructure to members of the Centre
- distribute research results to the wider public to make an impact on the wellbeing of bilingual and multilingual communities and individuals, including influencing social and educational policies and practices concerning them.
