Institute of Visual Research (IVR)
Description
The Institute of Visual Research (IVR) is located within a prominent group of art-related institutions at the University of Oxford, including the History of Art Department, the Ruskin School of Art, the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, the Pitt Rivers Museum, and the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology. It serves as a platform for interdisciplinary researchers studying visual imagery in a broad sense, encompassing various fields of study.
Operated by a diverse steering committee, the IVR offers a platform for visual research within the Humanities Division and promotes collaboration among scholars, practitioners, curators, philosophers, and writers across the Oxford community. It actively supports and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among graduate students and early career fellows, while also facilitating connections with national and international research organisations.
The IVR aims to examine the diverse aspects of visual culture, including its historical development, the practices and politics of display, its theoretical and philosophical dimensions, and its contemporary status and global impact.
A key objective of the IVR is to organise events that foster new research initiatives of international significance. This includes an annual symposium focused on relevant themes and workshops that provide insights into current trends in visual culture. Additionally, the IVR invites two visiting professors each year, one with a practical orientation and the other with a theoretical focus, who are leading figures in the field.
