Institute for Ethics in AI

Description

The Institute for Ethics in AI is a research institute in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford, headquartered in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities. It brings together philosophers and other humanities scholars with researchers in science and technology and with leaders in industry, government and civil society to study the ethical questions raised by artificial intelligence. It was launched in 2021, made possible by a donation from Stephen A. Schwarzman, and grew out of Oxford's existing strength in the ethics and governance of AI. Its research is organised around six priority areas: AI policy, law and regulation; AI and humanity; AI and creativity; AI, health and care; AI, society and the family; and philosophy to code, the last led by the Institute's Laboratory for Human-Centered AI (HAI Lab), which builds open-source tools that put philosophical concepts such as agency and human flourishing into practice.

The Institute runs the Accelerator Fellowship Programme for established researchers, DPhil scholarships, a funded Visiting Fellowship, an unfunded Visitor Programme and the Bernard Williams Essay Prize for students, and in 2026 launched the Oxford Executive Programme in Ethical AI Leadership, a fee-based residential course for senior leaders. It supports the Aspen Institute's Technology Leaders Initiative with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, is an affiliate of the International Association for Safe and Ethical AI, co-develops an annual lecture with the Cosmos Institute, and publishes white papers with partners including Digital Care Hub and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. It works closely with affiliated Oxford centres including the Oxford Internet Institute, the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities.
