Oxford Empathy Programme
Description
The Oxford Empathy Programme (OxEmCare) is an interdisciplinary research group comprising medical practitioners, philosophers, psychologists, and sociologists. Its aim is to promote empathy in healthcare interactions, recognising that this may require additional time. The group strives to integrate the evidence-based benefits of empathic care into all healthcare settings and interactions.
Empathic care has been proven to enhance patient outcomes and improve the well-being of practitioners. Trials have demonstrated that empathic care can reduce patient pain, depression, anxiety, and practitioner burnout, while also lowering patient complaints and medico-legal risks. Moreover, it can enhance patient satisfaction, well-being, and medication adherence.
Key Areas Of Work:
- Conducting and sharing research on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of empathic healthcare, as well as the factors that facilitate its delivery.
- Influencing healthcare policy and practice to support the provision of empathic care.
- Developing and delivering empathy-related training and development programs for healthcare practitioners, managers, and trainees.
