Neuroscience, Ethics and Society

Description

The Oxford Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience conducts independent ethics research and provides ethical guidance for various scientific and clinical studies. They collaborate with international institutions and researchers, with a particular focus on young people, mental health, and neuroscience advancements globally.

Being situated within the Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience enables the team to integrate their work with cutting-edge research and clinical developments in psychiatry and neuroscience. They maintain independence through their affiliation with the Oxford Uehiro Centre in Philosophy and close relationship with the Oxford Ethox Centre in the Nuffield Department of Population Health. These collaborations are part of the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities, starting from October 2017.

Given the extensive and exciting range of ethics and societal foresight needs in psychiatry and neuroscience, the team collaborates with experts in ethics and social sciences from Oxford and beyond for specific projects. They form collaborative, multidisciplinary teams that integrate science, ethics, and society in a genuine, critically engaged, and reflexive manner. This allows for knowledge sharing and expertise exchange across different projects and disciplines.

The team's integrative and responsive perspective informs the development of the Psy-Ethics teaching and ethics advising programme. This initiative builds on the existing strengths of Oxford, such as the Oxford Ethox Centre and the Department of Philosophy, as well as the Oxford NHS Trust. They also lead the work on Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in the newly awarded Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), focusing on mental health and dementia.

Recently, they secured funding from the Stanley Centre for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute to establish the Oxford Global Initiative in Neuropsychiatric GenEthics (NeuroGenE). Over the next year, NeuroGenE will expand its team in Oxford and collaborate with bioethics experts internationally, including those from China, Japan, Australia, and Finland, who share scientific interests with the Stanley Center.
