Classical Art Research Centre (CARC)
Description
The Classical Art Research Centre (CARC) is a strategic research unit within the Faculty of Classics at the University of Oxford. Its primary objective is to promote and facilitate innovative research in various aspects of ancient Greek and Roman art, while also undertaking its own projects. CARC offers physical and virtual archives, databases, web resources, conferences, workshops, and publications, catering to a global audience beyond Oxford.
Established in 2007, CARC emerged from the Beazley Archive, which was relocated to purpose-built facilities in the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, situated adjacent to the Ashmolean Museum in central Oxford. The Beazley Archive houses the largest collection of photographs dedicated to ancient Greek pottery with figure decorations. This Archive, along with the online Beazley Archive Pottery Database (BAPD), remains integral to CARC's endeavours.
