The Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) is a renowned research centre at the University of Oxford. Since 2003, COMPAS has built an international reputation for its original research and policy relevance. It conducts interdisciplinary research, publishing, teaching, and engaging with a wide range of academic and non-academic users globally.
COMPAS's research encompasses various global migration processes and phenomena, spanning from conditions in places of origin for migrants to the institutions and activities influencing mobility, as well as the social and economic impacts in receiving contexts.
With over 25 staff members from diverse backgrounds, COMPAS actively participates in numerous international networks and projects. It is located within the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography and maintains strong connections with departments throughout the University of Oxford.
Mission and Objectives: COMPAS's mission is to conduct high-quality research to develop theory and knowledge, train the next generation of academics and policymakers in migration studies, inform policy-making and public discourse, and engage with research users in the migration field.
Aligned with this mission statement, COMPAS's objectives are as follows:
- Academic Advancement: Reflect and advance theory, methods, and interdisciplinary understanding in the field of Migration Studies. Contribute new empirical data and support international collaborations and publications in migration research.
- Education: Provide graduate programs on migration at the master's and doctoral levels. Offer expert training to policymakers and other individuals interested in migration issues. Build capacity among migration researchers and practitioners.
- Policy Informing and Public Discourse: Provide evidence and analysis to policy-makers and the general public. Facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration with relevant policy makers.
- Knowledge Exchange with Research Users: Establish reciprocal relationships with individuals and organizations experienced in migration, including migrants and their organisations, government bodies, businesses, international organisations, third sector, and civil society organisations.
- Long-term Sustainability: Operate efficiently as a centre and ensure a diversified funding base that enables the pursuit of a long-term mission and vision.
