Centre for the Cultural History of War

Description

Founded in 2003, CCHW explores cultural histories of war across a range of geographies, seeking to. understand the cultural attributes and representations of modern war and its impact on society, culture and humanity. It reflects Manchester’s distinctive expertise in collective memory and histories of the two world wars, colonial wars, mass violence, humanitarianism, population displacement and childhood. It is one of five centres devoted to the study of modern war in the UK, and is one of just two focusing on cultural approaches. The CCHW runs a successful book series with Manchester University Press, entitled the ‘Cultural History of Modern War’. The ‘Corpses of Mass Violence and Genocide’ project (EU funded) has produced a series of volumes with Manchester University Press. The Centre oversees the MA pathway in War and Culture, maintains strong PhD recruitment, with a range of funders, and attracts funded Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. CCHW hosts collaborative research grants and sustains an extensive set of impact activities, including public exhibitions, radio and TV programmes, projects with charities and young learners, and artistic commissions.

The Centre’s interlocking themes are:

·       Cultural Responses to Conflict and the Holocaust

·       Memory and Commemoration

·       Childhood and Youth in War

·       Heroes and Heroism

·       Humanitarianism and Refugees
