Heritage and Humanities, Manchester Metropolitan University
Description
This group addresses the significant issues of the understanding, interpretation and reuse of the
already constructed and intangible aspects of the built environment. Methods used by members of
the group include practice-based and archival research, field work, critical analysis and inscriptive
practices. Interdisciplinarity is fundamental to their approach, appreciating what architecture brings
to collaborations as well as learning from others. This includes understanding under-represented
histories, innovative approaches to theories, and the development of new methods.
Thematic priorities:
• Adaptive Reuse: heritage, culture, sustainability and retrofit
• Contemporary theories of architecture, the city, and spatiality.
• Innovative cross-disciplinary collaborations expanding the scope of what architecture ‘is’
or ‘can be’.
• Under-represented histories of architecture/ histories beyond the ‘canonical’ or
conventional.
• Developing new methods for architectural research.
