Centre for Age, Gender and Social Justice, Aberystwyth

Description

The Centre for Age, Gender and Social Justice established in 2015 has to date, conducted 22 research projects that have been committed to engaging in research that directly involves participants in the design, implementation, analysis, knowledge exchange and further dissemination of research findings. Our approach builds the research capacity of different sectors of the population with a strong focus on diversity and inclusion. To date, we have 573 volunteers aged between eight and 93 years of age.

The Centre has a strong reputation for producing high-quality research. Described as the ‘centre for excellency’ by the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, our research is used to inform policy and practice, aiming to bring about positive lasting change for victim-survivors across the life course. With a keen focus on enhancing knowledge exchange and impact, we adopt creative and innovative ways to share learning gained through research into existing practices, embedding findings and promoting sustainability. To date, we have shared our research findings with over 23,000 practitioners across the UK and have been invited to give evidence at policy and legislative levels.

The interdisciplinary Centre team are highly experienced in co-production, engagement with hard-to-reach populations and researching sensitive topics including: victim-survivors across the life course; perpetrators; care homes; safeguarding; domestic abuse; mental capacity; dementia; and, gender and sexuality.

The Centre has primarily focused on participatory action research working with a diverse range of older people. The team have sought to convey the ‘lived experiences’ of people through a wide range of mediums including film, animation, podcasts, peer reviewed journals, webinars, petitions, art and poetry.
