Textile Circularity Centre (TCC)
Description
The Textiles Circularity Centre (TCC), funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) from 2021 to 2024, aims to convert post-consumer textiles, crop waste, and household refuse into renewable materials for the textile industry. This will aid in developing innovative supply chains and enhancing textile production, design, and consumer experience.
The TCC proposes to ensure material security within the UK by creating a circular flow of textile resources. This approach will invigorate the UK's textile manufacturing sector, SME apparel, and creative technology industries while reducing reliance on imported, environmentally detrimental and ethically questionable materials. The TCC aims to facilitate the transition to a more circular economy, promoting the 'designed and made in the UK' brand.
Guided by members from the Royal College of Art (RCA) and the University of Leeds, the TCC collaborates with Cranfield University, University of Cambridge, University College London, University of Manchester and University of York. It also partners with a wide range of stakeholders from industry, NGOs, and the public sector to promote improved social, economic, and environmental outcomes.
The TCC is a four-year initiative, receiving a £5.4 million grant as one of five circular economy centres under the UKRI National Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centres Research programme. The TCC's research programme encompasses three intertwined strands: Materials Circularity, Circular Supply Chain, and Consumer Experience.
