Archaeological Leather Group (ALG)

Description

The Archaeological Leather Group (ALG) exists to promote the study of leather and of leather or skin objects from archaeological and other historical contexts. It is based in the UK but has an international membership from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. Members include archaeologists, academics, conservators, museum curators, leather workers and specialist reconstructors.

ALG aims to provide a forum for the investigation of leather – both its production and its products – bringing together a broad range of knowledge and experience both scholarly and practical. The Group has been holding meetings twice a year, in spring and autumn, since 1987. In recent months meetings have taken place online by Zoom and this has enabled wider participation.

The ALG Newsletter is published twice a year and a comprehensive bibliography is maintained to which all members are invited to contribute. Publications of conference proceedings have been produced on a regular basis since 1998, while the Group itself was founded by some of the pioneers in archaeological leather research in 1986.
