Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group

Description

The Statistical Cybermetrics and Research Evaluation Group is a specialised unit dedicated to information science research, emphasising online methodologies. The group's focal points include research evaluation, research on research, and the development of digital humanities and social science research methodologies. The group explores alternative research indicators (altmetrics), scientometrics, social media content analysis, and sentiment analysis. Furthermore, the team devises methods and software to aid research evaluation and social web studies.

The group collaborates with various United Nations organisations, governments, non-governmental organisations, and international projects to study social web phenomena or research assessments. It offers supervision for PhD research involving altmetrics, scientometrics, and general social science research that incorporates a substantial component of web-based quantitative methodologies.

The group's performance in the UK's Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF2014) placed them fifth in the UK for Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management. The majority of their research was rated either "world leading" or "internationally excellent".

The group has received funding from the European Union for multinational projects and has completed various academic research and consultancy contracts. This includes work for multiple United Nations groups, the European Commission Directorate-General of Research, the BBC World Service Trust, and several other international agencies.

The group's areas of specialisation include scientometrics, webometrics, social media analysis, research evaluation, societal impact assessment, and the application of LLMs in research. They provide a PhD in Library and Information Management, as well as supervision in cybermetrics, webometrics, information science, informetrics, and general social science research with substantial internet-based quantitative methods components.
