Description

The Education, Social Justice and Transformation Research Group is both local and international in focus and encompasses education in its broadest sense, formal and informal. It seeks to open up opportunities to share and explore critical, radical, alternative and liberatory approaches to the research and practice of education across multiple global contexts. Considerations of the role of education in relation to contemporary global challenges and crises are vital. This group offers an interdisciplinary meeting place and source of support and inspiration for those engaged in critical educational and pedagogical research at the university and beyond.

The group aligns with two areas of the thematic focus as part of the Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR): marginality and equality. In relation to marginality, the research group explores marginalised identities and experiences within education, the role of education in reproducing marginality, and ways of ensuring it can become more accessible and inclusive. It will also consider the role of education in addressing histories of marginalisation and exclusion and ways of bringing about social justice and reparation locally and globally.

In relation to equality, the research group brings an awareness of intersectional inequalities as they affect learners, educators and other staff in educational organisations. It supports research which seeks to further equity and social justice across a spectrum of educational settings. The group engages questions of place and space, recognising ways in which inequities, hierarchies, marginalisations and exclusions are reproduced in the space-places of education. It endeavours to attend to local, global and transnational politics of knowledge production, recognising and seeking to disrupt coloniality.
