Migration, Inequality and Development Hub (MIDEQ)
Description
The Migration for Development and Equality (MIDEQ) Hub elucidates the complex interplay between migration and inequality within the Global South. MIDEQ's primary objective is to reshape the understanding of this relationship by shifting the generation of migration-related knowledge from the Global North towards countries experiencing substantial migration.
Drawing upon the proficiency of partners across twelve countries, MIDEQ aims to cultivate an evidence-based comprehension of migration, inequality, and development's interconnected nature. This knowledge then serves as a foundation for developing pragmatic policies and practices that enhance the living conditions of migrants, their families, and their communities.
Despite South-South migration accounting for over a third of all global migration, its potential to reduce poverty and inequality remains under-realised. Inequalities profoundly influence migration patterns, affecting who can migrate and the rights and resources accessible to them. A dearth of evidence exists regarding the interaction between social and income inequalities.
Current development approaches overlook the broader economic, political, and social factors influencing migration. Existing research tends to focus on individual countries, overlooking the flow of people, resources, and knowledge between countries of origin and destination. Dominant political narratives, focused on migration management and border control, further complicate this picture. Additionally, disjointed, top-down policy and legal frameworks tend to dehumanise migrants, emphasising economic outcomes at the expense of human experiences and wellbeing.
MIDEQ endeavours to challenge these prevailing assumptions and deepen the understanding of South-South migration's impact on inequality and the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, it aims to scrutinise the effect of interventions targeting inequality reduction in relation to South-South migration, build interdisciplinary migration research capacity in the Global South, and influence national and international policy-making processes. Ultimately, MIDEQ seeks to improve migrants' lives and their communities.
