Centre for Community Journalism (C4CJ)
Description
Cardiff University's Centre for Community Journalism (C4CJ), a key engagement initiative, commits to serving the communities in Cardiff, Wales, and beyond. This centre serves as a hub for independent community journalism in the UK and Europe, providing networking, research, training for community journalists, and fostering sustainable local digital and print journalism.
Rooted in Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, the C4CJ emerges from a tradition of high-quality training and research, coupled with dedication to local journalism. The Centre aligns with the University's Civic Mission by fostering community news hubs in Wales and providing guidance to hyperlocals in the UK and globally. Its 'Making News Toolkit for Schools' initiative is central to the University's strategy of enhancing educational outcomes through partnerships with Welsh schools.
Since its establishment in 2013, the Centre has trained thousands of learners in both online and offline settings. It has a keen focus on local level journalism, which is highly valued yet increasingly vulnerable. Acknowledging the various challenges such as the rise of the internet, declining readership and advertising revenues, fewer opportunities due to cost-cutting, and dwindling trust following high-profile scandals, the Centre is committed to shaping the future of local news.
The Centre's strategy comprises three core elements:
-
Training and Outreach: It offers courses for UK hyperlocal journalists to equip them with required skills including news gathering, legal and ethical frameworks, digital platforms, social media use, and community and content strategies. It also extends training to third party organisations like the Welsh Government, National Union of Journalists, and National Education Union.
-
Networking and Advice: Serving as a hub for sharing best practices in independent community and hyperlocal news, the Centre supports a global network of community journalists, curating a resource library for them and disseminating the latest insights.
-
Research and Monitoring: Given Cardiff University's high research impact and excellence ranking, the School of Journalism, Media and Culture contributes significantly to the work with practitioners and third-party organisations, influencing the Centre's advocacy.
The C4CJ is keenly aware of the current challenges in the field but remains committed to the value of quality journalism, aspiring to create a sustainable future for local news while addressing practical realities.
