Centre for Advanced Studies in Language and Communication (CASLC)
Description
The University of York's Centre for Advanced Studies in Language and Communication (CASLC) is an interdisciplinary research hub dedicated to the study of language and communication in diverse social and institutional settings. Its members, originating from various departments such as Education, Health Sciences, Language and Linguistic Science, Psychology, Social Policy and Social Work, and Sociology, view language and communication as fundamental to their disciplines. Their research spans across a myriad of social settings and institutional contexts, including healthcare, education, politics, employment, industry, and legal sectors, focusing on how effective communication impacts outcomes in these domains.
The Centre utilises the expertise of its members in studying language application, integrating various methodological and theoretical approaches from their disciplines. The primary emphasis is on exploring interaction and communication dynamics, which involves the sequential analysis of language usage. The Centre largely adopts the methodological perspective of Conversation Analysis (CA), an approach which has significantly contributed to a holistic view of language use, focusing on interaction and communication dynamics.
Key functions of the Centre include conducting basic research on linguistic patterns and processes in social interaction, applying this research to improve communication in social and organisational contexts, facilitating interdisciplinary research on language and communication, providing postgraduate training especially on the PhD Programme Language and Communication, and promoting collaboration between Centre members, research students, post-doctoral and other visitors. Furthermore, the Centre provides training in the Conversation Analysis methodology and its application in research projects.
