Interdisciplinary Centre for Narrative Studies
Description
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Narrative Studies (ICNS) at York undertakes a broad spectrum of work on narratives and narrative theory. It unites researchers from the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, covering all historical periods. Rather than synthesis, ICNS fosters dialogue in interdisciplinary research, which enriches each participant's specific field. The reach of its networks extends beyond the York academic community.
ICNS' research is organized around four themes: Narrative and Complex Systems, Interactive Narrative, Fictionality, and Narrative in the Humanities. Each theme encapsulates various activities and projects, some of which cross thematic boundaries.
The Narrative and Complex Systems theme is ICNS' most comprehensive interdisciplinary initiative, uniting humanities scholars with complex systems analysts from diverse scientific and social science fields. This theme benefits from a strong partnership with the York Centre for Complex Systems Analysis and is the host of the international NarCS network.
The Interactive Narrative theme, which began with a collaboration with Computer Science at York, has evolved into several unique research lines. These projects investigate the potential of interactive narrative in new media, reciprocally informing digital technology development and narrative theory understanding.
The Fictionality theme, initiated by the English department's Fictionality research group, highlights ICNS' historical breadth and cultural specificity. This theme argues that fictionality is not an ontological quality but a rhetorical tool in communication, whose usage is pragmatic, contextual, and not confined within generic fictions.
The Narrative in the Humanities theme forms the bedrock of ICNS' interdisciplinary narrative studies. It supports a plethora of research activities that promote cross-humanities dialogue and collaboration, emphasising narrative's importance across various media, and the interaction of formalist and ideological perspectives through narrative theory.
