Centre for Anatomical and Human Sciences

Description

The Centre for Anatomical and Human Sciences collaborates closely with their counterparts at the Universities of York and Hull. Their teaching, reflective of their expertise in clinical, functional, and comparative anatomy, encompasses comprehensive undergraduate medical instruction in both core medical anatomy and specialist areas like human evolution and evolutionary medicine. The Centre also contributes to the instruction of human and primate evolution for Archaeology undergraduates at York.

In terms of postgraduate studies, the Centre provides MSc programmes and doctoral training in their specialist areas. Additionally, they offer short courses in specialist and applied areas of anatomy and anatomical science.

Their York-based team is part of PalaeoHub, within the Department of Archaeology, for research relating to the evolution and biomechanics of musculoskeletal systems. They are foundational members of York's Centre for Human Palaeoecology and Evolutionary Origins, a large UK research group focusing on human origins and variation.

Their research revolves around the ecological, evolutionary, functional, and developmental bases of morphological variation in humans, primates, mammals, and reptiles. A primary research strand aims to understand how skeletal and dental morphologies evolve in terms of developmental processes and functional adaptations. Particular focus is given to how feeding demands and other activities shape the skull and how these behaviours can be interpreted in fossil organisms. Another research focus is understanding the functional integration in the skeleton.

Underpinning technologies such as geometric morphometrics, CT imaging, finite element analysis, multibody dynamics analysis, 3D printing, mechanical testing equipment, and laser scanning are crucial for their research. These technologies have also been used in functional studies and imaging.

Their work has direct relevance to the study of human evolution, the understanding of modern human biological variation, and significant medical and forensic applications, particularly in the use of morphometrics in diagnostic imaging modalities and kinematic analyses of facial and body motion.
