Centre for Historical Research
Description
The Centre for Historical Research encompasses scholars researching diverse subjects such as class, gender, society, war, terrorism, and retailing. Aside from British and Irish history, they also delve into German history. This thriving research community features doctoral students, myriad publications, and a dynamic program of internal and external events. It has been granted funding by various entities including AHRC, ESRC, Leverhulme, and Marie Curie programmes, and maintains international scholarly connections throughout Europe, North America, Australasia, and Asia.
Two impactful case studies were submitted to REF2021 by the Centre. The first explored the use of history in transforming the General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU)'s education curriculum, thereby aiding the personal development and career advancement of its members. The second investigated military history in public commemoration and professional military education. This study used historical cases to assess the development of Armed Forces, and was instrumental in shaping the UK's commemorative agenda during the First World War Centenary.
Research areas include class, gender, and generation; war and conflict; and retailing and distribution. The Centre for the History of Retailing and Distribution (CHORD), part of the Centre for Historical Research, has acted as an international hub for researchers studying retailing, distribution and consumption history since 1998.
