Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy
Description
CAGE, a research centre within the University of Warwick's Economics Department, conducts autonomous, policy-driven studies informed by historical, cultural and behavioural factors. Its objective extends beyond conventional economic success indicators to consider wider influences on global prosperity, such as cultural and behavioural attitudes, voter preferences, and political institutions. The team analyses historical and contemporary data to draw insights for contemporary policy. CAGE is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Comprising nine Research Theme Leaders and Deputy Leaders, along with numerous internal and external associates, this compact team of experts employs economic principles to probe data innovatively. They strive to understand the determinants of economic success and how history, culture and behaviour shape, and are shaped by, the global economy. CAGE generates robust evidence to guide policymakers and journalists, thereby influencing policy and discussion. Its academic working paper series and bi-annual magazine, Advantage, spotlight the team's research, while policy briefings and themed reports provide valuable insights for current debates.
Regular briefings across the UK and a policy conference create impact from the team's research, facilitating dialogue between academics and policy specialists on contemporary economic and political issues. An annual summer school supports emerging talent.
Their research is rooted in the principal themes of culture, history, and behaviour. Individual projects fall under five areas: Economic history, Culture, behaviour and development, Public policy and data, Political economy, and Wellbeing.
