Languages in Coventry Research Group
Description
The Coventry Language Research Group, founded in 2018 within the University of Warwick's Department of Applied Linguistics and School of Modern Languages and Cultures, investigates and advocates for multilingual education within Coventry's society. In 2018-19, they successfully secured GRP Connecting Cultures funding for a project analysing the evolution of language education policies in Coventry over the past 50 years. This initiative enabled the establishment of an influential network of local educators and administrators.
In 2019-20, the group was granted Faculty of Social Sciences Research Development funding for a project focused on mapping language instruction within Coventry. It examined various factors such as the distribution of languages taught, the types of schools involved, socio-economic factors impacting language learning, and the response to community multilingualism.
Recently, they have aligned with the Multilingual Cities Movement and are supporting a local initiative to designate Coventry as a 'City of Languages'. Currently, they are conducting research in three main areas: Community Languages, English as an Additional Language/English for Speakers of Other Languages, and Modern Foreign Languages in primary/secondary schools. This research aims to support a larger funding proposal in collaboration with local partners.
