Institute for Global Sustainable Development (IGSD), Warwick

Description

The Institute for Global Sustainable Development (IGSD), inaugurated in 2019, spearheads the generation of knowledge pivotal for a more sustainable, prosperous, healthy, and just world. In 2022, under the new directorship, the IGSD strived to serve as the research hub for global sustainable development at Warwick University. It collaborates with all faculties and associated centres and institutes, propelling its innovative and significant research. Furthermore, it contributes to moulding the research pillar of the University’s Sustainability Strategy.

IGSD’s mission is to augment Warwick's lead in transdisciplinary research on global sustainable development. To realise its vision, IGSD adopts a three-pronged strategy:

  • Expansion and consolidation of its research portfolios on environmental policy, resilience in multi-species communities facing planetary challenges, and complex ecosystems and climate change, with an emphasis on water security.
  • Becoming Warwick's gateway to sustainability through research and practice.
  • Advocating and gaining recognition for its leadership in global sustainable development, working with partner Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to develop a Sustainability Excellence Framework and a future transparent accreditation scheme.

Other activities include facilitating the implementation of Warwick's Sustainability Strategy, forming sustainable development research networks, launching the Early Career Researcher Sustainability Training School and an Annual Sustainability Conference, securing large-scale funding, and increasing policy impact on sustainable development.

IGSD's research themes include Environmental Governance, which seeks to foster good governance principles in environmental policies; Complex Ecosystems and Climate Change, which aims to understand transformations towards a sustainable future; and Resilience, which investigates crisis/adversity/change through resilience in various contexts, focusing on the 'community of relations'.
