Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies

Description

The Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies consolidates expertise in cultural management, media policy, creative and social enterprise, digital cultures, and the creative and media industries. Its approach juxtaposes practical industry insights with critical consideration of underlying theoretical and conceptual queries, thereby preparing students for related careers and contributing to a myriad of disciplinary fields. The Centre's multi-disciplinary team is bolstered by early career researchers, esteemed practitioners, and visiting experts. With a global alumni network spread across various sectors, the Centre has awarded over 1500 degrees, some leading to PhDs at Warwick.

The interdisciplinary environment bolsters research and consultancy in cultural policy, media studies, communications, and digital culture. Researchers have secured funding from various councils and institutions, including the AHRC, ESRC, NERC, the British Academy, HEFCE, and ACE. Colleagues hold key roles in research centres, Global Research Priorities, and external consultancy. They also contribute to impactful research and publications in cultural and media policy.

Founding members have shaped the field of cultural policy studies through contributions to the International Journal of Cultural Policy and the ICCPR. Over the years, they have extended research in culture and creativity through various interdisciplinary publications. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 90% of the Centre's research outputs were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

The Centre offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including a BA in Media and Creative Industries, research degrees, and Masters programmes. Students connect with an international network of researchers, cultural managers, and creative organisations. Teaching at the Centre uses the 'Warwick model', which prioritises small class sizes, personalised learning, professional development, and innovative teaching approaches.

The Centre's research informs policy and engages with a wide range of practitioners, stakeholders, and communities across several sectors. It has established partnerships in environmental and cultural sectors, and promotes entrepreneurial activities with various entities. Students participate in projects to address cultural, strategic, and commercial challenges, and staff contribute to projects on aesthetic practice, digital innovation, heritage management, arts impact, and media management.

The Centre collaborates with other Warwick units and focuses on research themes including Cities, Places, Environments; Memories, Histories, Futures; The Value of Culture; Future of Creative Work; Theory, Aesthetics, Popular Culture; Ethics, Politics, Rights; and Pedagogic Research.
