Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies

Description

Established in October 1984 with the aid of the Leverhulme Trust and the Nuffield Foundation, the Centre for Caribbean Studies was the first of its kind in the UK, acknowledging the importance of the Caribbean region and its historical connections with the UK and globally. Its main objective is to foster teaching and research about the Caribbean, highlighting its Atlantic context with comparative, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary consideration of African, North and South American, Asian, and European influences. It also functions as a national forum for individuals and organisations focused on the diaspora and nations bordering the Caribbean.

In 2010, to mark its 25th anniversary, the Centre was rechristened the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies, paying tribute to the Guyanese philanthropist and businessman's enduring association with, and support for, the Centre, which has developed into one of Europe's foremost institutions for Caribbean scholarship.
