Warwick Classics Network
Description
In 2017, the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick received funding from the Warwick Widening Participation Development Fund and, in 2018, from the Warwick Impact Fund, leading to the establishment of the Warwick Classics Network (WCN). The WCN aims to enhance and expand Classics education throughout Coventry, Warwickshire, and beyond, and to disseminate the department's research.
Outreach and Impact activities play a crucial role in the department's programme. Annually, their Ancient Drama Festival attracts over 500 students and teachers from across the UK. In 2018, the department received the University of Warwick Public Engagement Award for these outreach activities.
Established in 2018, the Warwick-based WCN is a community of educators and academics devoted to promoting Classics and its education in Coventry, Warwickshire, and beyond. It was set up with two main objectives: to provide resources, advice, and a communication platform for existing Classics teachers, fostering a creative network; and to encourage the introduction of Classics in schools without it in their curriculum. To achieve the latter, it collaborates with organisations such as Classics for All and Advocating Classics Education, offering information on available training and funding.
