Bristol Centre for Linguistics (BCL)
Description
The Bristol Centre for Linguistics aims to enhance public understanding of language and communication by addressing pertinent local, global, and national challenges through research, public outreach, and engagement. The Centre's mission includes facilitating knowledge exchange in linguistics and underscoring the importance of language research to the general public via its seminar series, affiliations with external organisations, community outreach, and assorted salaried and voluntary research/outreach roles.
The Centre's present research embodies four primary strands exploring diverse linguistic disciplines, ranging from psycholinguistics to sociolinguistics. These strands investigate language and communication from historical perspectives to contemporary contexts, undertaking analyses of writing, speech, and non-verbal communication in both digital and non-digital realms. Additionally, it investigates the acquisition and processing of language by speakers. The research significantly leverages interdisciplinary methodologies and explores several languages, encompassing Finnish, Polish, Welsh, Japanese, Farsi, and English.
