Description
The University of the Highlands and Islands' Institute for Northern Studies led the UHI Area Studies submission to REF 2021, securing the top position in Scotland and jointly in the UK for research impact. Notable for its unique postgraduate programmes, such as Orkney and Shetland Studies, Highlands and Islands Literature, Scottish Heritage, Viking Studies, and Islands Studies, it was founded in 2007 with operations in Orkney, Shetland, and Perth.
Furthermore, it collaborates with UHI Orkney, UHI Shetland, and UHI Perth and their learning centres and island communities. The programmes, delivered via online and video-conferencing methods, attract students globally. The offered courses include BA (Hons) in Culture and Heritage and MLitt in various areas like Highlands and Islands Literature, Island Studies, and Viking Studies, amongst others.
