UHI Centre for History
Description
The Centre for History conducts research on Highland, Scottish, and international history. Situated in the cathedral town of Dornoch in Sutherland, the Centre provides a broad spectrum of undergraduate programmes to students across the university region as well as, from 2024-25, internationally online. The Centre also offers four postgraduate online courses globally.
Innovation in teaching has been a key focus since the Centre's inception in 2005. The university delivers live online lessons via video conferencing, fostering an interactive academic community. Lectures and classes are supplemented with bespoke online resources on the university’s virtual learning platform, including various forms of interaction, and we have led the way in use of Talis online reading list software to enhance student provision.
The Centre has witnessed a significant surge in postgraduate enrolment in its MLitt programmes over recent years with students joining the Centre from locations, including Australia, Canada, the US, China, Kenya, Romania, Italy, Germany, as well as the Highlands, Scotland, and the UK. Staff-led online discussion boards enable students to interact across different geographical zones, and optional video-conference sessions are offered to help build student community.
The Centre hosts a dynamic research culture, with staff expertise exploring various aspects of Highlands and Islands, Scottish, British, and international history. Additionally, the research staff contribute to wider university research culture and external research bodies, editorial boards, and committees. The Centre fosters collaborations outside the university, inspiring a community-led, co-produced research model with a transregional and transformative impact. The Centre hosts a wide variety of doctoral researchers, many of whom opt for Highland-based research and engage deeply with local communities. Other doctoral research is carried out across a broad spectrum of national and international areas complementing diversity of staff research specialisms.
The Centre is deeply committed to its local base but also enjoys international recognition and is an academic success story. It continues to cultivate novel research and teaching areas, with a commitment to sustain its distributed nature while reinforcing its online and in-person communities, regardless of their location.
