UHI Centre for Living Sustainability

Description

The UHI Centre for Living Sustainability seeks to magnify the voices of marginalised individuals within communities in the Highlands and Islands and worldwide. Embracing an interdisciplinary and innovative approach to research, the Centre endeavours to comprehend the intricate dimensions of change and uncertainty. Its aim is to enable communities to address social, environmental, and economic challenges sustainably, paving the way for transformative changes.

The Centre aspires to achieve national and international recognition for its impactful, interdisciplinary research and teaching in fields such as biodiversity, ecology, sustainability, culture, equity, and social justice. This informs an innovative tertiary education which addresses biodiversity and climate crises, and empowers communities across the region.

The Centre explores various themes such as:

  • People and Nature
  • Youth Futures and Inclusion
  • Education
  • Community Psychology and Wellbeing
  • Business, Entrepreneurship and Communities
  • Creative Practice and Literature

The Centre aims to challenge inequalities and foster inclusive sustainable development through creative, community-embedded research. It strives to understand intersecting aspects of identity, inclusion, social norms, hierarchies of knowledge, and structural inequalities. The Centre also recognises the importance of understanding changing contexts, ranging from historical to contemporary conflicts, political transitions, environmental changes, cultural norms, and power dynamics.

Different temporal scales of complexity, change, and uncertainty are considered. The Centre values perspectives on cultural and natural heritage, as well as visions for future generations. Inclusivity is central to its approach, with an emphasis on youth engagement. Through partnerships and dialogue, the Centre connects communities, enterprises, and policy makers as agents of change.

Key cross-cutting themes include:

  • Inclusion and intersecting inequalities
  • Intergenerational and community-driven research
  • Navigating change and complexity
  • Creativity and culture
  • Mobility and migration
  • Innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Global learning contexts
