Institute of Austrian and German Music Research (IAGMR)

Description

The Institute of Austrian and German Music Research (IAGMR), founded in 2018 within the Department of Music and Media at the University of Surrey, offers a platform for pioneering research into Austrian and German music. It challenges traditional 'Austro-German' formulations and the assumptions of 'unmarked' culture, and explores underrepresented or suppressed musical repertoires. This Institute encourages inclusive methodologies, diverse orientations, and a wide range of topics, particularly promoting equality and diversity. It is equally interested in the social politics and philosophies of music.

The IAGMR seeks not just to reevaluate canonized musicological thinking but also to address historical biases and omissions. It explores genres, borders, and concepts and facilitates new interpretations and post/decolonial forms of engagement. Its geographical scope includes the music and culture of Germanophone people globally. In terms of historical scope, it ranges from antiquity to the present day, acknowledging that historical boundaries can be porous and multivalent.

The Institute encourages interdisciplinary research, inviting contributions from scholars from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines, including those who have been historically under-represented in academia. It champions an expansion of current thinking, engaging with practitioners from diverse fields such as Africana studies, gender and queer studies, postcolonial studies, psychology, and new media studies.

The IAGMR's objectives include developing new understandings by examining the established practice of grouping Austrian and German culture together. It also scrutinizes and encourages research into specific works, figures, and issues, and promotes research from diverse cultural contexts, making non-English-language scholarship accessible to a global audience.

The Institute's activities include hosting conferences, symposia, study days, research seminars, and collaborative projects, and publishing through various channels.
