Walking, Art, Landskip and Knowledge research group (WALK)
Description
The University of Sunderland hosts the W.A.L.K. research centre, Walking, Art, Landskip and Knowledge.
Recent years have seen a rise in both practical and theoretical interest in 'art walking'. Despite receiving critical attention in disciplines like anthropology and tourism, its precise definition and exploration as an artistic practice with a long history and thriving present remain insufficiently examined. The W.A.L.K. centre aspires to play a significant role in overseeing and critically appraising the practice of 'art walking' and its relationship with various art forms such as painting, sculpture, photography, music, and performance.
W.A.L.K. naturally forms a research cluster at the University. Members' sculptural practice entirely revolves around art walking and embodied practice. Together, their work constitutes a considerable research area with the potential to expand and enhance a combined understanding of contemporary and historical practice. It spans the complete gamut of artists' walking practice, from walks leading to an object to walks that constitute the artwork itself. They are also mindful that researchers from other university departments have expressed interest in W.A.L.K. and seek to cultivate this enthusiasm.
Their contributions encompass arranging regular seminars and symposiums, maintaining an online journal, and curating exhibitions. The three co-founders have an impressive international portfolio of 'art walking' projects in the USA, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, as well as extensively in the UK and Ireland.
