National Glass Centre
Description
Previously known as The Institute for International Research in Glass (IIRG) and established in June 1998, the National Glass Centre Research focuses on the investigation and development of artistic glass on a national and international level. The research involves the production of new glass artworks, developing innovative techniques for glass making, creating new models of practice in glass making, and contextual and historical studies on glass. The Centre's work is largely guided by the perspective of creative practitioners.
Additionally, the organisation offers residencies, masterclasses, workshops, and curates exhibitions, publishing related literature. This is facilitated by extensive research facilities housed in the University of Sunderland's Glass and Ceramics Department's studios, located in the National Glass Centre on the banks of the River Wear, Sunderland. The facilities boast a wide range of equipment including a CAD waterjet cutter, a large kiln, research workshop, and print studio, all supported by expert staff.
In 2011, the Ceramics Arts Research Centre University of Sunderland (CARCuos) was launched to further ceramics research alongside the National Glass Centre Research. Combined, these centres host about 30 research students worldwide studying for PhD and MPhil degrees. The National Glass Centre Research aims to:
- Advance knowledge relevant to contemporary glass practice and explore various dissemination methods through the production of new artworks, exhibitions, residencies, masterclasses, workshops, and publications, fostering engagement between professional glass artists, students, and the general public.
- Provide a platform for discourse and exploration on both contemporary and historical aspects of glass.
- Support postgraduate research students in the field of glass.
