Suffolk Sustainability Institute (SSI)

Description

Suffolk Sustainability Institute (SSI) is devoted to addressing climate change causes. The repercussions of climate change and environmental degradation pose significant threats to public health, the global economy, and biodiversity. SSI endeavours to disseminate its research widely, offering concrete benefits on global, national, and local scales in climate change mitigation and adaptation. This is achieved by working towards a low carbon future, actively decarbonising the built environment, industry, and physical infrastructure. Moreover, SSI strives to foster collaborative climate and sustainability-related research with tangible impact. The Institute leverages the expertise of its internal researchers and external partners to advance its research agenda. SSI aims to establish a skilled team within the University of Suffolk, leading innovation and transformational multidisciplinary science. This will facilitate sustainable resource usage and assist regional and global communities in achieving Net Zero emissions.

SSI's mission is to lead and contribute to high-quality research, training, and innovation, promoting effective action on climate change, sustainable resource use, and environmental health.

SSI's research focuses on three key themes encompassing a variety of emerging research disciplines and pressing sustainability challenges in urban and rural areas:

  • Green Infrastructure
  • Sustainable Healthy Communities
  • Energy and Resource Management

The Institute is committed to ensuring its research findings are beneficial to all. SSI encourages applied research opportunities and knowledge exchange through its ongoing projects, demonstration and testing facilities, including the newly established Ecolab Living Laboratory.
