Scottish Oral History Centre (SOHC)
Description
The Scottish Oral History Centre (SOHC), established in 1995 at the University of Strathclyde, facilitates academic use of oral history in cognate areas like archives and museums. The SOHC comprises eleven more staff members with a significant record of publications and research. The team supervises many students employing oral history techniques in their undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
The SOHC, having a strong reputation in Scotland, is expanding its international connections, with links across Europe, North America, and Africa. It collaborates with the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS) at the University of Concordia in Canada, where several SOHC staff members hold Research Affiliate status. The COHDS and the SOHC have organised international conferences and jointly run an International Oral History Summer Institute.
The SOHC strives to be an international hub for oral history study, research, and training, and to promote cross-disciplinary, transnational research. It aims to enhance knowledge transfer programmes, encouraging networking with other scholars and organisations. It is developing expertise in employing new technologies in oral history, fostering the intellectual growth of future scholars, and securing external funding to support these aims.
