Black Death Network
Description
The Black Death Network combines two axes, one on the crisis of the 14th century and one on the history of plague (caused by Yersinia pestis), both intersecting at the Black Death (1346-1353). Infamous for killing 30–60% of the European population, the Black Death was only one among multiple disasters of the profoundly tumultuous 14th century following harvest failures and human famine triggered by climatic deterioration. But the Black Death was only one major pandemic event of Y. pestis, a pathogen emerging already in Neolithic Eurasia and causing outbreaks until today.
Understanding both the 14th-century crisis and the history of plague requires:
- a broad interdisciplinary approach, bringing together humanities and sciences;
- comparative approaches both spatially and temporally to detect recurring patterns or unique events in complex human-environment interactions.
The Black Death Network intends:
- to bring researchers from various disciplines together;
- to create an interdisciplinary network sharing information on new research;
- to connect students and experienced scholars from all disciplines.
