Centre for Cosmopolitan Studies (CCS)
Description
The University of St Andrews Centre for Cosmopolitan Studies (CCS) explores cosmopolitanism, which encompasses global societal complexity, individual experiences, and the openness of a just society. CCS promotes a social science approach that emphasises individual experiences in understanding contemporary social and cultural environments, aiming to illuminate the ethical dimensions of citizenship in a diverse and dynamic society.
CCS organises seminars and conferences, hosts visiting scholars, provides studentships, and publishes research findings. It also cooperates with other researchers, projects, and institutions, stimulating discussions on topics like identity, social inclusion, multiculturalism, liberalism, migration, sovereignty, freedom, and belonging. These discussions are critical for understanding individual roles in society and culture in the 21st century.
Cosmopolitan Studies is an ontological, methodological, and political endeavour. It studies the human condition beyond social, cultural, and historical differences, seeks optimal methods for understanding humanity, and analyses the freedoms and rights of human expression regardless of societal, cultural, and historical contingences.
