Centre for Amerindian, Latin American Studies and Caribbean Studies (CAS)
Description
The Social Anthropology Department at the University of St Andrews, incorporating interests and expertise beyond staff specialities, is committed to research about Latin America, the Caribbean, and Amerindian societies, irrespective of the discipline. Established in 1969 by Douglas Gifford, the Centre for Latin American Linguistic Studies (CAS), now in its 51st year, is one of the oldest research centres at the University. From September 2022, CAS will be promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, networking, and dialogue. CAS maintains a vibrant seminar series each term featuring guest speakers and postgraduate students, and collaborates with other university departments for event hosting.
The Centre provides a modest array of facilities, including a reading room, a post-graduate computer room, and an administrative office. It also houses a library predominantly consisting of linguistics texts, accessible by appointment. Additionally, CAS disseminates region-specific specialist knowledge through occasional papers and monograph series.
