Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs (CEPPA)

Description

The Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs (CEPPA) at the University of St Andrews conducts research, hosts academic events and promotes public discourse within the realms of ethics, social and political philosophy, and public affairs. It collaborates with several university departments, notably Art History, Divinity and History, through various initiatives such as conferences and fellowships.

A prominent feature of CEPPA is the annual Sir Malcolm Knox Lecture, established in honour of the former Professor of Moral Philosophy. It invites distinguished figures in moral, social, and political philosophy, establishing the series as a leading platform in these fields.

CEPPA, initially titled the Centre for Philosophy and Public Affairs, was founded by the university in 1984. Its creation echoed St Andrews' commitment to moral philosophy, a discipline taught since the university's inception in 1413. The centre, modelled after similar North American institutions, resides within the School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies. It has gained national and international recognition, and its wide-ranging activities have received considerable external funding.
