Cross Cultural Circa Nineteenth Century Research Centre (c19c)

Description

The Centre for Cross-Cultural Circa Nineteenth-Century Research (c19c) was launched in St Andrews in May 2017. The Centre aimed to unite the wealth of nineteenth-century research expertise present across various disciplines at St Andrews. Their inaugural meeting saw 35 colleagues establishing a monthly seminar series in the 2017-18 academic year to discuss their research interests. To further extend their reach, the founding members successfully achieved official Centre status for c19c from the University of St Andrews in April 2018.

The mission of c19c is to broaden the study of the nineteenth century in three significant ways:

  • They aim to extend their research beyond conventional timelines by considering the 'long', multiple, and nascent 'nineteenth century' within various national, geographical, sub-disciplinary, and cultural-linguistic contexts, including the transnational movements within and beyond them.
  • They emphasise the cross-cultural dynamics of nineteenth-century studies, promoting research that explores the circulation, exchange, and interconnections of ideas and cultural heritages. They encourage multicultural, interdisciplinary, and multilingual research that incorporates comparative, multilingual, and transdisciplinary approaches.
  • They include expertise from both inside and outside academia, akin to the inclusive nature of nineteenth-century amateur 'literary and scientific' societies. They acknowledge the importance of collaborating with archives, museums, galleries, and collections, promoting research that is inter- and multi-medial. c19c aims to foster next-generation research that brings fresh and renewed understanding of the nineteenth century.

Postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines are especially welcome to join their team of researchers.
