Institute for the Study of War and Strategy
Description
The Institute for the Study of War and Strategy, established in 2016 by the University of St Andrews, welcomes visitors to its website. Serving as an interdisciplinary home for academics with interests in war, conflict, and strategy, the Institute comprises members from a myriad of university disciplines including International Relations, History, Computer Science, and Philosophy, among others.
Since its inception, the Institute has grown into a vibrant research hub, organising fortnightly seminars, hosting visiting scholars, and running a master's degree in Strategic Studies. Major conferences hosted include Strategy and its Making in Early Modern Europe (2016), The Present and Future of Air Power (2018), and Afghanistan: Lessons Learned (2019). The Institute has also facilitated discussions with academics, government representatives, and industry practitioners.
Future ambitions of the Institute involve the launch of a 'Strategy Project' to explore the evolution of strategic ideas in management/business and state/military contexts, as well as an initiative focusing on crisis simulations and war gaming.
The Institute's mission is to facilitate research and public discourse on a broad array of war and strategy-related topics such as the role of armed forces in contemporary politics, military and naval history, ethical issues related to war and strategy, and the practice of strategy beyond the military.
Built on three core principles—valuing interdisciplinary research, fostering exchange between academics and practitioners, and maintaining a strong link between research and teaching—the Institute functions as an intellectual hub within the University. It hosts a multitude of researchers, students, and practitioners with expertise in areas of war and strategy and offers the M.Litt programme in Strategic Studies.
Institute activities encompass seminars, workshops, study days for practitioners, and masterclasses for postgraduate students.
