St Andrews Institute for Gender Studies (StAIGS)
Description
The St Andrews Institute for Gender Studies (StAIGS) unites faculty from the entire university, all of whom are interested in gender research. StAIGS boasts more than 100 Academic Affiliates across 18 schools including Art History, Biology, Classics, Computer Science, Divinity, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Economics, English, Geography and Sustainable Development, History, International Relations, Management, Mathematics, Medicine, Modern Languages, Philosophical-Anthropological-Film Studies, Psychology and Neuroscience, and Physics and Astronomy.
As an inherently interdisciplinary research area, Gender Studies encompasses numerous topics, ranging from feminism and women’s studies to masculine studies, queer theory, and sexuality studies. It adopts an intersectional approach to analyse its subjects, acknowledging the interconnectedness of gender, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, power, and inequality. The Institute also recognises trans studies as a distinct research field from queer theory and strongly endorses research in this area.
